At Bernwode Plants we aim to grow and sell plants which are not readily available elsewhere, from native wildflowers and historical varieties to more recent introductions. Being uncommon does not necessarily mean they are difficult to grow, but often have been forgotten for some reason and we try to keep them going, for posterity. Too many good, old plants have become extinct (and still are becoming) because of fashion and 'the latest thing'. Most are hardy, and chosen because they are suited to the British climate. Most are perennial. None require a lime free soil, though many will also thrive in light acidity. There is a good mix of Alpines, Herbaceous, Shrubs and Climbers. All our plants are grown here and since we know their habits we are well placed to advise customers. We also grow a selection of half-hardy plants. These can be particularly valuable in containers as they usually flower throughout the summer. Please note - mail order for plants ended at the close of 2006. The plants catalogue has now expired and will not be replaced. Free copies are available to visitors to the nursery, while stocks last. The 103 page general catalogue includes a huge range of plants - herbaceous, herbs and shrubs - with descriptions and notes on culture, history and uses. It doesn't contain photographs - just packed with information.
